US Pledges a Further $31 Million as PM Shah Prepares to Take Nepal's Flood Catastrophe to the UN

The United States announced on 23 September a further $31 million for Nepal's flood recovery — bridges, shelter, water/sanitation and drones — taking total US aid past $36 million. The pledge, made in New York by Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker to Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, comes as PM Balendra "Balen" Shah prepares to address the UN General Assembly on 24 September over the 26 August glacial-collapse flood that killed at least 1,377 and left 5,130 missing, per the Foreign Ministry's last published tally (10 September); Nepali outlets have since cited figures nearer 1,400, so the toll remains unconfirmed a month on.

Roughly 70 Americans remain unaccounted for. Opposition MP Gyanendra Shahi has accused the government of "state-sponsored killings" over failed tunnel rescues, as forecasters warn of fresh rain from 25–27 September. For Nepalese Britons, this is both a humanitarian emergency and a test of the new government.
