LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government is exploring new proposals aimed at attracting some of the world's most accomplished individuals to the United Kingdom.
A special "global talent task force" is reportedly considering plans to eliminate visa costs for a select group of international experts, including leading scientists, academics, and digital specialists. The objective is to stimulate economic growth.
The initiative would see visa fees reduced to zero for individuals who have studied at one of the world's top five universities or are recipients of prestigious awards.
The current "global talent" visa application fee is £766, with the same cost applying to family members.
These discussions are taking place as the United States adopts a more restrictive approach to immigration, including the recent introduction of a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas, which are widely used by the tech industry.
This decision by the U.S. has provided further impetus for those within the UK government who are advocating for a more liberalised high-end visa system.
It is hoped that any changes will spur economic development ahead of the upcoming Budget on November 26th.
