ABU DHABI — The president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, met with OpenAI's chief executive, Sam Altman, in Abu Dhabi on Saturday to discuss strengthening cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI).
The meeting highlights the UAE's ongoing, multi-billion-pound push to become a global leader in AI development and its drive to build a knowledge-based economy.
The discussions focused on collaboration in AI research and its practical applications within the public and private sectors in the UAE.
This aligns with the nation's ambitious strategy to create a fully integrated AI ecosystem, which includes building one of the world's largest AI data centers and pioneering the development of a new Arabic-language AI model.
The UAE is strategically leveraging its strong relationship with the United States to secure access to advanced AI technology. In a landmark agreement signed in May, the two countries agreed to establish one of the largest AI campuses outside the US.
The deal, announced during a visit by US President Donald Trump, is a cornerstone of the UAE's efforts to position itself as an indispensable partner in the global AI race.
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Altman was awarded the first-ever honorary doctorate by the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world's first graduate-level research university dedicated solely to AI.
The award further cements the strong relationship between the UAE's academic and governmental sectors and global tech leaders like OpenAI.
