New WPP Chief Executive Takes Helm Amidst Financial Headwinds

London – The British advertising group WPP has appointed Cindy Rose, a former Microsoft executive, to the helm as its new Chief Executive. Her appointment comes as the company faces a challenging financial outlook, with its share price more than halving this year.

Rose, who has been on WPP's board since 2019, officially began her role on 1 September 2025. She has a significant task ahead, telling staff that she would not "sugarcoat this, we have a lot of hard work ahead." Her appointment follows a recent dividend cut by the company, a move that provides her with financial flexibility to review its strategy.

The shift in leadership follows a period of struggle for WPP, which has been losing ground to competitors. The company recently lost its position as the largest advertising group to French rival Publicis. Publicis has benefited from early investments in technology, including its AI platform, Marcel.

WPP, however, is not without its own technological assets. It has rolled out its own AI platform, WPP Open, to help clients and is beginning to see positive results. The company recently secured the Mastercard media account, a deal worth £148 million in annual spending.

Despite its recent struggles, WPP is attracting attention from investors. Analysis from Panmure Liberum showed that hedge funds increased their holdings in the company by 44 per cent in the second quarter. This suggests that some investors see a significant opportunity for future growth through potential restructuring.
