New UK Prime Minister Inherits an Unresolved Gurkha Pension Fight — With Veterans Threatening a "Fast Unto Death

Keir Starmer resigned as Prime Minister on 20 July 2026 and was replaced by Andy Burnham, Britain's seventh PM in a decade, following weeks of party turmoil. The handover lands squarely in the middle of the most sensitive unresolved file affecting the Gurkha community: equal pensions for veterans who served between 1948 and 1993.

On 14 July, then-Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis told Nepal's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal he would personally push the issue forward "regardless" of the looming change in government — but Jarvis's own tenure had begun barely a month earlier, on 12 June. Former Gurkha soldiers have warned of a "fast unto death" in Kathmandu if their 11-point charter, including equal pay and pensions under the 1947 Tripartite Agreement, is not honoured. The core controversy: Britain continues to offer a "welfare package" rather than pension parity, which veterans reject outright. Whether Burnham's new Cabinet reopens or stalls the talks is now the community's central question.
