Nepal's U-20 Women's Team Dominates Bhutan 8-0, Strengthens Title Bid in SAFF Championship

Dhaka, Bangladesh – The Nepal U-20 women's football team showcased a commanding performance on Saturday, securing a resounding 8-0 victory over Bhutan in the SAFF U-20 Women's Championship.

The match, held at the practice ground of Bashundhara Kings Arena Sports Ground in Dhaka, saw hat-tricks from Nepal's star forwards, Purnima Rai and Meena Deuba. This propelled their side into a strong position for the championship crown.

The comprehensive win underscores Nepal's attacking prowess, as they asserted control from the initial whistle. Meena Deuba wasted no time, opening the scoring within the first minute of play.

She continued her impressive form by adding two more goals in the 12th and 65th minutes, completing a sensational hat-trick. Purnima Rai also demonstrated her scoring ability, finding the net in the 23rd minute, during the first half's injury time, and again six minutes into added time, to secure her own treble.

Other contributors to Nepal's formidable scoreline included Samikshya Magar, who scored in the 9th minute, and Kusum Khatiwada, who netted in the 63rd minute. Head coach Yam Prasad Gurung made strategic substitutions in the second half, resting Purnima Rai and Senu Pariyar and bringing in Barsha Oli and Kusum Khatiwada to maintain intensity.

With this dominant result, Nepal now boasts 12 points from five matches, accompanied by an impressive goal difference of +26, significantly enhancing their championship aspirations.

The SAFF U-20 Women's Championship is a biennial international football tournament for South Asian national teams under 20. This edition features four participating nations: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

The tournament is played in a double round-robin format, with the top-ranked team at the conclusion of the league stage being declared the champion.

Historically, Nepal has been a strong contender in SAFF youth tournaments, having finished as runners-up in previous U-20 editions (2018, 2023).
