Kathmandu — In a move aimed at restoring order and confidence in the government, Nepal's newly appointed interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, expanded her cabinet on Monday, September 15, 2025, with the swearing-in of three new ministers. The new cabinet includes some notable appointments. Kulman Ghising, a former executive director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) widely praised for his efforts to end load-shedding, has been appointed as the Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation. His appointment signals the new government's focus on essential services and infrastructure.
Adding to the cabinet's expertise are two other key figures. Om Prakash Aryal, a prominent lawyer, was sworn in as the Minister of Home Affairs and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. His legal background is expected to be crucial in navigating the political and legal challenges facing the new administration. Meanwhile, former Finance Secretary Rameshore Khanal has been tasked with leading the Ministry of Finance, a role that will be critical for addressing the economic fallout from the recent protests.
This cabinet expansion comes just days after a tumultuous week in which large-scale protests and violence led to the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. President Ramchandra Paudel appointed former Chief Justice Karki as the interim Prime Minister last Friday, September 12, 2025.
The new interim government faces the immediate challenges of rebuilding public trust, restoring services, and addressing the root causes of the recent unrest. With the formation of a full cabinet, the administration can now begin the work of stabilizing the country and preparing for future elections.
