Nepal’s international airport resumes operation

Kathmandu -  The Tribhuvan International Airport, which was closed since Tuesday, has resumed operations since 3:30 pm on Wednesday.

Issuing a public notice, Tribhuvan International Airport Civil Aviation Office, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said that  a meeting of the Tribhuvan International Airport Security Committee has decided to reopen the closed airport.

After the airport is operational, Tribhuvan International Airport Civil Aviation Office, Civil Aviation Authority has urged passengers to come to the airport only by contacting the agency where they bought their tickets or the concerned airline.

Earlier, issuing a public notice, Tribhuvan International Airport Civil Aviation Office, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said operations of the TIA, Nepal’s only international gateway, have been suspended indefinitely due to the adverse weather conditions and safety.

The decision was made citing multiple challenges, including prohibitory and curfew orders, deteriorating conditions within the Kathmandu Valley, and reduced visibility caused by smoke on the runway, all of which pose significant risks to aircraft safety, read the statement.

As a result of the closure, both domestic and international flights had been severely affected. 

Meanwhile, the Airlines Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) said that with the reopening of the airport, the association's member airlines will also operate their flights as usual.

Passengers have been urged to contact the relevant airline companies and reach the airport on time to assist them once the airport is operational, it said.

Shuttle bus service launched for tourists

In the meantime,  Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal’s tourism fraternity, in coordination with the Nepal Army, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), and the Department of Immigration, have launched a dedicated shuttle bus service for tourists.

The service, operational from September 11, 2025, aimed at  safe and reliable transportation for visitors traveling to and from TIA and central Kathmandu. 

“With the current uncertainty and restrictions on movement, we remain committed to the safety and convenience of our valued guests and visitors,” said NTB officials. The initiative aims to support tourism operations while adhering to the security protocols enforced under the curfew and prohibitory orders.”
