Kathmandu - Nepali youth belonging to the Gen Z generation – those under 28-year-old, have registered their names in the voters’ list in Nepal in huge numbers, reports said.
According to officials, an additional 8,370,094 people have registered their names in the voter list opened by the Election Commission following the announcement of fresh elections to the House of Representatives slated on 5th March 2026.
The registration period for the voter list ended at midnight on Friday.
According to the Election Commission, 344,914 new voters were enrolled using biometric registration while 492,180 people registered using their National ID. The provision allowing registration through National ID was introduced later, and it saw an encouraging response.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki wrote on social media that the deadline for voter registration has now officially ended.
By November 2, the number of citizens who had reached 18 years of age stood at 18,168,023. The earlier deadline for voter registration was November 16, but due to high demand and requests from concerned stakeholders, it was extended until November 21.
Mrs Karki was appointed Prime Minister of an interim government in September this year following Gen Z led protests calling for an end to corruption and lifting of ban on social media.
Over 70 people were killed and nationwide arson and vandalism took place during the two-day protests (September 8 and 9) following which then Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned from his post and fled from his official residence at Baluwatar in Kathmandu under Nepal Army’s protection.
He is now living in a rented house at Gundu, Bhaktapur – within the Kathmandu valley- after his house at Balkot, Bhaktapur was torched by angry protesters.
