Nepal to observe September 8 as ‘Gen Z Day’

Kathmandu – The government of Nepal has decided to observe September 8 as ‘Gen Z Day.’

The Council of Ministers on Monday took the decision in memory of the Gen Z protests that took place mainly on September 8 and 9 this year.

At least 19 youth, including a 12-year-old student were killed in police firing in and around Nepal’s parliament premises on September 8, and hundreds of others were injured.

Over 55 others were killed across the country in the violent protests on September 9 leading to the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.

President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as an interim Prime Minister and tasked here to conduct early elections on 5^th March 2026.

He also dissolved the lower house of the parliament upon her recommendation.

Gen Z protests were called against the ban on many social media outlets by the Oli-led coalition and widespread corruption in the country.

The government has since announced free medical treatment to all those injured.

Leading business houses have announced that they will provide employment to the families of martyrs.

The government said it will also provide ID cards to the families of youth who were killed during the protests.
