KATHMANDU – Nepal has experienced a staggering 2,853 disaster incidents in the four-month period from mid-April to mid-August, resulting in the deaths of 126 people and the injury of 585 others. According to data released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the series of events has also left 23 individuals missing and affected over 5,000 families across the country.
The data reveals that the period was dominated by a wide variety of natural and human-caused disasters. Incidents of flooding (216), landslides (317), and heavy rains (221) were particularly prevalent, underscoring the severe impact of this year’s monsoon season. These water-related events were accompanied by numerous other incidents, including lightning strikes (245) and snakebites (77).
Fires accounted for a significant number of incidents, with 1,114 reported cases, alongside 158 wildfires. Other disasters included storms (277), wild animal attacks (172), and a handful of earthquakes (5) and boat capsizing (2) incidents.
The situation remains dire, with new disasters being reported almost daily. On August 16 alone, the NDRRMA documented seven fires, one flood, and eight landslides, which collectively led to the death of one person.
