Nepal Protests Continue, Defying Widespread Curfew After 19 Deaths

Kathmandu – Youths continued to protest in Kathmandu and across the Valley on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, defiantly ignoring curfew orders imposed by the authorities. The ongoing demonstrations follow a day of violent clashes on Monday that resulted in at least 19 fatalities and over 400 injuries, according to reports.

The total death toll from the previous day's Gen Z protest against corruption and a government-ordered social media shutdown includes at least 17 in Kathmandu and a further two in Itahari.

To contain the unrest, authorities have enforced curfews across the districts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. In Kathmandu, a curfew was declared for all areas inside the Ring Road from 8:30 AM NST until further notice.

Lalitpur’s curfew is in effect from 9:00 AM to midnight NST in parts of wards 2, 4, 9, 18, and 25, including areas like Bhaisepati and Sanepa.

Bhaktapur also imposed restrictions from 8:30 AM NST until further notice in its municipalities. These orders prohibit all gatherings and movement, but many youths have continued to rally, with several arrests made in front of the Federal Parliament building.

One protester remarked, “Yesterday’s incident exposed the government’s failure. I came here to stand with the youths.” The government's response to the protests has drawn sharp criticism from both ruling and opposition party leaders, who have condemned the use of repressive measures.
