Kathmandu - The government of Nepal has introduced Euro 6 vehicle emission standards for imported vehicles.

In a bid to reduce harmful pollutants from vehicles, the government has upgraded vehicle emission standards to Euro 6 from Euro 3, officials said.

The Euro 6 emission standards have been implemented in all four-wheelers.
Likewise, these vehicle emission standards have also been imposed for assembled transports and imported spares and parts.

However, construction equipment like tractors, power tillers, dozers, crane trucks, rollers and imported special military vehicles on the recommendation of the Ministry of Defense are not mandated to meet the Euro 6 vehicle emission standard, officials said.

However, Euro-V will be required for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and micro-four-wheelers.

Nepal had  enforced Euro 3 standards since the 2012/13 fiscal year, with earlier plans to implement Euro 4 within two years. However, 13 years later, the government is directly moving to Euro 6.

Nepal first introduced emission standards in the 1999/2000 FY, equivalent to Euro 1.

These were revised in 2012 to match Euro 3. Since then, repeated attempts to update the standards stalled due to commercial pressure and debate over adopting Euro 4 or Euro 6, reports said.
