Nepal committed to the UN Charter, Non-alignment: PM Karki

Kathmandu – Prime Minister of the interim government, Sushila Karki, has said her government’s  foreign policy continues to be guided by the Charter of the United Nations, non-alignment, principles of Panchsheel, international law and norms of world peace. 

At a diplomatic briefing to the Diplomatic Corp in Kathmandu held on Friday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PM Karki, who also holds the Foreign Affairs portfolio, said that Nepal is  proud to be the largest troop contributing country for the UN peacekeeping operations, a modest but meaningful contribution to global peace.

Premier Karki, however, did not mention anything regarding her government’s commitment to ensure that Nepal’s land is not used against her immediate neighbours.

Previous Nepali governments have repeatedly said that Nepal enjoys unique relations with India and is committed to One China policy, but Mrs Karki was economical in her words and did not touch upon this sensitive topic.

She made it clear that holding election to the House of Representatives (HoR) on March 5, 2026 is the sole and non-negotiable mandate of the government.

PM Karki emphasized that the mandate of the government is “to hold free, fair, and impartial general elections to the House of Representatives on March 5, 2026”.

“We are committed to a maximum six-month term, after which we will peacefully hand over power to a democratically elected government,” she said.

She termed the Gen-Z movement as a powerful reminder for collective responsibility to listen, respond, reform and deliver.

“It also reflects people’s profound aspiration for good governance, economic opportunity and integrity in public life. While our achievements since the adoption of the new constitution are modest, this movement has warned us that there is no room for complacency. We must rededicate ourselves to deliver to our people for their legitimate aspirations,” she said.

President Ram Chandra Poudel had appointed Mrs Karki as interim Prime Minister after then Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned following violent Gen Z protests.

He also dissolved the House of Representatives upon the recommendation of the interim Prime Minister Karki.
