More than 6,000 dengue cases reported in Nepal

Kathmandu -  Nepal has recorded more than 6,000 dengue cases from 75 districts of the country, officials said.

According to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) under the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), 6,668 dengue cases have been confirmed so far.

Dr Gokarna Prasad Dahal, Head of the EDCD's Vector-borne Disease Control Section, said that at least five people have succumbed to dengue.  No cases have been witnessed so far in Himalayan districts of Dolpa and Manang.

The highest cases have been observed in Bagmati Province, standing at 1,649, followed by Gandaki Province (1,631), Lumbini Province (1,117), Koshi Province (896), Sudur Paschim Province (762), Karnali (447) and Madhesh Province (139). 

Also known as the ‘break-bone fever,’ patients show the symptoms three to seven days after the bites of mosquitoes-- Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. 

High fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and body pain are major symptoms of dengue.

Nearly 15 million affected from Dengue worldwide

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the incidence of dengue has grown dramatically worldwide in recent decades, with the number of cases reported to WHO increasing from 505,430 cases in 2000 to 14.6 million in 2024. The vast majority of cases are asymptomatic or mild and self-managed, and hence the actual numbers of dengue cases are under-reported. The disease is now endemic in more than 100 countries.

From January to July 2025, over 4 million cases and over 3000 deaths have been reported from 97 countries, the WHO said.
