KATHMANDU — A total of 13,591 inmates and 964 children have escaped from 27 jails and nine Juvenile Correction Centres across Nepal amid the recent Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. The unprecedented prison breaks have raised significant concerns about public safety and security.

According to the Director of the Department of Prison Management, Chomendra Neupane, the total number of inmates in the country was 29,212, while the correction centres housed 1,422 children. So far, 5,495 inmates and 244 children have either been recaptured or have returned voluntarily.

A nationwide manhunt is now underway for the 8,816 remaining inmates and 720 children who are still at large.
