UK - London saw its lowest summer homicide figures in seven years, according to provisional data. Between June and August, no killings of people under 25 were reported during the school holiday period.
The mayor’s office noted overall homicides dropped by a quarter compared with the same time last year, falling from 78 to 58. So far in 2025, there have been 10 under-25 homicide cases, down from 26 in 2024. Teenage killings also decreased to four, compared with nine a year ago.
Mayor Sadiq Khan credited the decline to joint efforts by the Violence Reduction Unit, the Met Police, and local partners. Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said homicide is at a decade-low, with violent injuries down 20% and gun crime less than half of what it was seven years ago.
Knife crime, however, remains a pressing concern. The Office for National Statistics reported a 9% rise in knife offences in London in the year ending March 2025, even as overall violent injuries fell 18% and homicides dipped 9%.
Campaigners welcomed the fall in homicides, stressing that every case is still a tragic loss. Critics warn that planned police budget cuts, including the loss of 1700 staff and school safety officers, could weaken efforts to keep young people safe.
