International Community Welcomes Nepal’s New PM Sushila Karki Amid Political Transition

Kathmandu, Nepal – Nepal's new interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, has received international congratulations following her appointment to lead a transitional government aimed at stabilising the country. A series of diplomatic statements from major global powers, including China, the United States, and India, has expressed support for the new leadership.

On Sunday, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry congratulated Karki, stating that Beijing "respects the development path chosen independently by the people of Nepal" and is ready to work with Kathmandu to enhance bilateral relations.

The United States also welcomed the appointment. In a statement on Sunday, the US Embassy in Kathmandu commended President Ramchandra Paudel and youth leaders for their commitment to a democratic solution. The embassy also expressed condolences for the lives lost in the recent protests and recognised the role of the Nepali Army and its Chief of Army Staff, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, in facilitating a peaceful transition.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations on Saturday, calling Nepal a "close and trusted friend" and praising Karki's appointment as a testament to women's empowerment. India's Ministry of External Affairs had also pledged its continued co-operation as a "close neighbour and long-term partner."

Karki, the first woman to serve as Nepal's prime minister, was sworn in on Friday following violent nationwide protests that have so far left at least 5 people dead, according to recent updates from the health ministry. Her interim government has been mandated to hold general elections on March 5, 2026.
