Himlung avalanche: 15 of 16 missing guides and kitchen staff confirmed dead at Manang base camp

Fifteen of the 16 mountain guides and kitchen staff reported missing after an avalanche struck Himlung Himal base camp in Manang District on Sunday 27 September have been found dead, with one person still unaccounted for, according to reports on 1–2 October. Eight more bodies were recovered on Thursday 1 October, two airlifted to Chame and six taken to Phu village. The victims were support staff working for two expedition companies preparing camps at the 7,126-metre peak, officials said. Rescue was led by volunteer guides from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, with Nepal Army helicopters supporting recovery.

The disaster sits within a wider pattern of late-September landslides and floods in Manang. It highlights the risks borne by Nepal's high-altitude support workers, whose families, including those abroad, depend on seasonal income. Uncertain: the identities of some victims, the full cause, and the status of the final missing person. Last verified update: 1–2 October 2026.
