London - The Bulgarian government and prime minister have resigned following weeks of anti-corruption protests across the country.
The Gen-Z led protests were driven by dissatisfaction in the government, economic grievances and the youth wanting change.
This comes 20 days before Bulgaria was set to join the Euro and follows the scrapping of a controversial budget plan which sparked the protests.
Gen Z were the driving force behind mass anti-corruption protests that helped topple the Bulgarian government after less than a year in office.
In November and December, hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians took to the streets across the country in some of the largest protests in 35 years.
On December 12, the government resigned.
The minority coalition headed by the conservative center-right party under Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov was accused of systemic corruption and disregard for the rule of law, DW.com reported.
This comes just weeks before Bulgaria is scheduled to join the eurozone on January 1, 2026.
Unlike previous rallies, the anti-corruption protests of the past two weeks were driven by Generation Z whose frustration with politics has moved from social media feeds to the streets.
The outcome of this protest may inspire similar movements across Europe, mainly in countries where young people feel disenfranchised. The protest has also sparked discussions on how political systems can adapt to address the concerns of younger generations, illuminem.com reported.
