Birgunj, Parsa — A specialist medical team dispatched by Gaur Provincial Hospital, Rautahat, has arrived at Narayani Hospital to support efforts against a rapidly escalating cholera and diarrhoea outbreak in Birgunj. The intervention follows confirmation of community-level transmission of the waterborne disease.
The five-member team, led by Dr Parashu Ram Yadav and Dr Bishnu Kumar Sah, includes two doctors and three health assistants, according to Mohammad Anwar Hasmi, Chairperson of Gaur Provincial Hospital.
As of Monday, health authorities have confirmed that 79 people have tested positive for cholera, while more than 100 patients with diarrhoeal symptoms are undergoing treatment across several health facilities in the city.
Earlier reports indicated 42 initial cases, with the outbreak traced to wards 11, 12, 13, and 16. Residents presented with symptoms such as acute watery diarrhoea and vomiting.
Hospitals in Birgunj are under intense pressure. Narayani Hospital has been forced to accommodate patients on floors and verandas due to acute bed shortages, while other cases such as fever and snakebites are compounding the crisis.
Water samples from affected areas have been sent to the National Public Health Laboratory in Kathmandu to identify the source of contamination.
In response, municipal authorities have temporarily closed schools for two days, launched door-to-door awareness campaigns, and initiated market inspections to monitor food and water hygiene.
