Gagan Thapa wins full term as Nepali Congress president as Deuba camp plans rival convention

Gagan Kumar Thapa was elected Nepali Congress president at the party's 15th General Convention in Kathmandu, with 6,584 votes against 375 for Shyam Krishna Khadgi, ANI reported on 10 October. Of 7,013 ballots cast, 6,959 were valid. It is the party's first regular convention since December 2021. Thapa first took the post at a special convention in January, which the Election Commission recognised and the Supreme Court upheld in April. However, a full bench allowed a review petition from Sher Bahadur Deuba and Purna Bahadur Khadka in August; it is pending with no hearing date. Deuba's camp boycotted the vote and has announced a rival convention for 7–9 December.

Thapa says his priority is winning back traditional voters lost at the March election; Congress holds 38 seats. Diaspora readers should note the unresolved legal challenge and possible split. Results are from one agency report; official party confirmation was not independently checked.
