London – A fundraising campaign has been launched to send the body of Nepali student Yoman Chand, who passed away in London, back to Nepal.
Twenty-six-year-old Chand, a resident of Darma Rural Municipality Ward No. 4 in Salyan district, had arrived in the UK just a year ago for his studies. He passed away on Tuesday morning.
He had come to the University of Hertfordshire to pursue an MSc in Communications and Information Engineering, and was planning to receive his certificate later this week upon completing his course.
His body is currently kept at Northwick Park Hospital, and will be handed over to his close relatives after the coroner’s report is issued.
According to Rajendra Pudasaini, President of NRNA UK, a fundraising campaign has been initiated after the deceased’s father, Sher Bahadur Chand, and mother, Oilee Chand, requested that their son’s body be repatriated to Nepal so they could see him one last time. Pudasaini appealed to everyone to contribute to this humanitarian cause.
On Thursday, during a meeting attended by Khamir Jung Gurung, President of Burnt Oak Nepali Society, other office bearers, close friends and relatives of the late Yoman, contact was made with his parents, and the Nepali community decided to raise funds and take the lead in sending the body back to Nepal.
The meeting also formed a committee to coordinate and monitor the repatriation process and fundraising through a ‘one-window’ system. The committee includes: Rajendra Pudasaini (President, NRNA UK), Khamir Jung Gurung (President, Burnt Oak Nepali Society), Murari Thapa (Vice-President, Burnt Oak Nepali Society), Sushma Gurung (Community Health and Wellbeing Coordinator) Sujan Shah (first cousin), Sonam Rawat (sister), friends Manoj Kunwar and Pramila Nepali.
The committee has requested all Nepali organisations and individuals living in the UK to contribute as much as possible through the “GoFundMe” link provided.
