London, UK - A murder inquiry has commenced in Bermondsey, South London, after a brutal stabbing incident at a commercial establishment on Monday afternoon resulted in two fatalities and two additional hospitalisations. Metropolitan Police were called to premises on Long Lane, SE1, just after 13:00 BST, to reports of multiple assaults.

Upon the swift attendance of emergency services, a 58-year-old man tragically died at the scene. A second victim, aged 27, succumbed to his wounds later in hospital despite medical efforts. Two other men, both in their thirties, were also taken for medical treatment. One individual, who has been detained in connection with the incident, remains in a critical, life-threatening condition. The other sustained injuries not deemed life-threatening. Authorities have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

Following the assault, a section of Long Lane was immediately sealed off as police initiated their investigation. Forensic officers were observed meticulously examining the area, known for its mix of modern residential flats and converted warehouse spaces, attracting a significant population of young professionals. Local residents expressed shock, noting such severe violence is uncharacteristic of their usually tranquil neighbourhood.

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, leading the Metropolitan Police's efforts in the borough, stated that the investigation is in its nascent stages, with detectives working diligently to ascertain the full circumstances. She reassured the community of a continued heightened police presence and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Southwark Council's Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhoods, Natasha Ennin, conveyed her profound dismay and sympathy regarding the loss of life, extending heartfelt condolences to the affected families and friends.

This tragic event casts a sombre shadow over an otherwise vibrant London community.
