Dhaka, Bangladesh – Nepal's aspirations in the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship were dealt a significant blow on Sunday as they succumbed to a dramatic 3-2 defeat against hosts Bangladesh. A last-gasp goal from Bangladesh's Trishna Rani Sarkar in the eighth minute of second-half injury time proved decisive, leaving the young Nepali squad stunned after a spirited comeback.

The high-stakes encounter, held at the Bashundhara Kings Arena, was a captivating affair marked by ebbs and flows, and a contentious second half that saw both sides reduced to ten players. Bangladesh asserted their dominance early, with Sinha Jahan Sikha opening the scoring in the 13th minute, swiftly followed by Sagorika doubling their advantage in the 36th.

However, Nepal demonstrated remarkable resilience. Anu Rai initiated their resurgence, converting a penalty to halve the deficit. This was followed by a crucial equaliser from Meena Deuwa, bringing the score to 2-2 and setting the stage for a tense finale. Despite their valiant efforts to claw their way back into the match, Nepal's defence ultimately faltered in the face of Bangladesh’s relentless final assault, culminating in Sarkar's heart-breaking winner.

In an earlier fixture, Bhutan showcased a commanding performance, securing a resounding 5-0 victory over Sri Lanka. Sangay Yangmo and Kelden Yangmo were the standout performers, each netting a brace, while Namsel Yangmo contributed the fifth goal. Bhutan had already established a comfortable 3-0 lead by the half-time whistle, laying the foundation for their dominant display.

This result leaves Nepal needing to regroup swiftly as the championship progresses, while Bangladesh celebrates a crucial victory on home soil.
