Curfew Imposed in Kathmandu as Youth Protests Turn Violent

Kathmandu — Authorities have imposed a curfew in parts of Kathmandu after youth-led protests against corruption and a government social media ban escalated into violent clashes with police. The unrest, which began peacefully, took a dramatic turn when demonstrators breached barricades and stormed the area around the federal Parliament building.

The District Administration Office has declared a curfew from 12:30 PM until 10:00 PM tonight. The order covers key protest zones, including areas stretching from New Baneshwor to Tinkune and Shankhamul.

Eyewitnesses reported that police used tear gas and fired aerial warning shots to disperse the crowds after they moved beyond the designated protest area. The demonstration, spearheaded by a movement of "Gen Z" youth, marks one of the most significant challenges to state authority in recent years.

The spontaneous protests have now spread beyond the capital, with parallel demonstrations reported in major cities such as Pokhara, Butwal, Dang, and Nepalgunj, signalling a nationwide wave of discontent.

Security forces across the country have been placed on high alert as analysts suggest the movement reflects a generational shift in Nepal’s political landscape.
