Bhotekoshi Flood Toll Revised to 1,409 Dead as Disaster Locks 14,500 Children Out of School

Three weeks after a glacial collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border unleashed catastrophic flooding along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, Nepali authorities confirmed 1,409 bodies recovered and 4,089 people still missing, according to figures reported by the Kathmandu Post on 18 September — down from 6,150 missing reported on 16 September as search teams recovered more victims. A separate government assessment, conducted with UNICEF and Save the Children, found the disaster has disrupted schooling for more than 14,500 children across 63 institutions in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading; at least 100 children have lost both parents.

In the disaster's early weeks, the UK Foreign Office told Parliament that dozens of British nationals were among hundreds of missing foreign tourists, though that figure has not been updated since late August. Reconstruction costs are officially estimated to reach up to $5 billion. All tolls remain provisional.
