The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said the list covers 32 districts and includes only cases confirmed by District Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees on the recommendation of local governments. Rasuwa accounts for 1,583 of the names. A separate list identifies 171 missing foreign nationals from seven countries, compiled from information passed by diplomatic missions through the Department of Consular Services. The full list is posted on the authority's website.
In a notice issued on Sunday, the authority asked anyone listed who has survived, or their immediate family, to file a claim within seven days. Further lists will follow as other districts and missions submit details.
The verified list is far from the full picture. The authority's running totals stand at 1,457 deaths and 5,285 people missing, meaning more than half of the missing have yet to be formally verified.
The list matters beyond the mountains. Families overseas, including in the UK, can check names and file claims, and formal verification is likely to underpin compensation, insurance and civil registration. That last point remains unresolved: under Section 40 of the National Civil Code, a missing person is generally presumed dead only after 12 years unless a court rules otherwise, and local officials have asked the Home Ministry for a faster administrative route.
