KATHMANDU, NEPAL – The bodies of four members of a family, killed in Dhodlekhani in ward 2 of Ramprasadrai Rural Municipality, Bhojpur, on Saturday night, have been sent to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan for forensic examination. The post-mortem is scheduled to be carried out today, Monday.

The deceased have been identified as 16-year-old Manisa Giri (wife of the accused), her 68-year-old father Bel Bahadur Giri, 45-year-old mother Manju Giri, and 9-year-old brother Sapan Giri. All four were found dead at their home after being attacked with a sharp-edged weapon.

The District Hospital in Bhojpur was unable to conduct the autopsies due to a lack of necessary equipment and technical limitations, necessitating the transfer of the bodies to Dharan. The incident site is approximately 32 kilometres from the Bhojpur district headquarters.

Police have accused 30-year-old Rajendra Rai, Manisa Giri's husband, of committing the murders. Rai was found seriously injured at the scene with a deep stab wound to his abdomen and is currently undergoing treatment at BPKIHS in Dharan under police supervision.

According to police, Rai himself called authorities after the attack, reportedly confessing, "I have killed people. Come and arrest me." However, Rai has also claimed self-defence, stating that his mother-in-law attempted to stab him first, and he subsequently seized the knife and used it to attack the family. Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Ishwar Karki, chief of the Koshi Province Police Office, stated that the case remains under investigation and all information gathered is being verified.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat of Ramprasadrai Rural Municipality has provided financial assistance to the deceased's family, who are reportedly in a weak financial condition. Rural Municipal Chair Tham Bahadur Rai of Ramprasadrai, handed over Rs 114,871 collected for post-mortem and other related expenses to the kin of the deceased.

The tragic incident remains under active investigation as authorities verify conflicting accounts.
