Avalanche and floods kill dozens across Nepal as extreme weather emergency deepens

Since Thursday 24 September, heavy rain across western and south-central Nepal has triggered floods and landslides that have killed at least 17 people, left four missing, injured four and displaced roughly 1,450 people from 419 households — mainly in Gandaki Province, Palpa and Dhanusha — according to Gandaki Province Police and Nepal Army figures reported by the Kathmandu Post as of Sunday evening. Separately, an avalanche struck Himlung Himal in Manang district on Sunday morning, killing two Nepali mountain workers and leaving up to 14 missing; a helicopter-borne rescue team reached base camp on Monday, but poor weather is hampering the search.

Both events follow Nepal's catastrophic 26 August glacial-collapse flood, which killed more than 1,400 people. Together they underline mounting pressure on Nepal's mountain communities, tourism workforce and infrastructure during an unusually destructive monsoon aftermath. Figures for both incidents remain provisional and are likely to be revised as rescue and damage-assessment operations continue.
