285 people killed in disasters across Nepal since mid-April

Kathmandu —   At least 285 people have lost their lives in various disaster-related incidents across Nepal since mid-April, 2025, officials said.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 27 people remain missing and over 1,000 others have been injured in over 4,000 recorded disaster events so far this year.

NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat told RSS news agency that 44 deaths were recorded on Monday alone, with five people reported missing. She said Ilam District was the worst hit, where 37 people were killed in massive landslides, adding that the latest weather system has affected 50 out of 77 districts across the country.

Since April, snakebites have emerged as the leading cause of fatalities, claiming 86 lives, followed by landslides (46 deaths) and lightning strikes (45 deaths).

Meanwhile, 23 people have gone missing due to floods, three in landslides, and one following an animal attack.

Spokesperson Mahat said the disasters have so far injured 1,072 people and affected 7,211 families across the country.
